 The price of electricity from wind and solar energy sources has fallen dramatically during the past few years, such that it is now competitive with conventional (fossil fuel and nuclear) energy sources without subsidies in many regions. However, transmission from often-distant,​ high-quality solar and wind resource regions to major demand centres, with sufficient redundancy to guarantee reliable supplies, remains a problem in many regions, but will be facilitated by further developments in high-voltage DC transmission systems.
